State of Decay

The end is here.

Life as you knew it has gone to hell after the mother of all zombie outbreaks. Now you and the few scattered survivors must band together to survive and rebuild in a 3rd-person action game set in a dynamic open world. You choose where to make your stand, designing and fortifying your home base, performing daring raids for food and ammunition, and rescuing other playable survivors with unique talents. The open, sandbox world develops in real-time, shaped by your actions, dynamically generating content based on your choices and the ever-increasing zombie threat.

State of Decay is our ambitious zombie-survival open world game, first released for Xbox360 and PC in 2013. In April 2015 we released State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition, a stunning, remastered version of the game full of new missions, weapons, and extra content.

What’s new? Mysterious supply crates start dropping into remote areas across the map, attracting massive hordes of zombies. While wiping out the infestation and you can grab some of the rarest and most powerful equipment seen in State of Decay.

As you fight the undead hordes you’ll find new survivors. Your favorite characters from Lifeline can now be unlocked in Breakdown, including the previously unplayable Kelly “Sasquatch” Eldridge.

Year One Edition also features new vehicles and weapons. Players navigate the apocalyptic landscape in a brand-new SUV. Custom vehicle skins are also distributed across all maps for greater personalization. As for weapons, you’ll find new assault rifles equipped with under-barrel grenade launcher attachments as well as shotguns that fire incendiary rounds.

We’ve all sat around with friends, debating the best ways to survive the zombie apocalypse. Well, the time for speculation is over; State of Decay will let you put your personal survival plan to the test.

Here’s what you can expect to see in State of Decay:

Zombie Survival

What if society came screeching to a halt? What if all our rules and laws no longer mattered? State of Decay brings these questions to life in a very real way. It’s not just about combat; it’s about doing what you must do to stay alive. Food, water, shelter, and ammo — you’ll need them all. Taking you beyond the initial panic, and beyond the first weeks of the crisis, State of Decay is the embodiment of the “What if?” zombie apocalypse scenario.

Intense Action

Move through the world like a zombie-slaying badass. Dive through windows, jump on cars, and take it to the living dead with baseball bats. Hop in a truck and mow down some undead pedestrians. Break into the local police station and clear out their arsenal or walk into the local grocery store to stock up on your favorite junk food. The world is your oyster…a shiny oyster that happens to be filled with zombies.

An Evolving World

State of Decay is an open sandbox world that develops in real-time, dynamically generating content based on your actions, the choices you make, and the ever-increasing zombie threat. Decide where you’d like to set up a fortified safe haven for you and other survivors you’ve rescued, then form raiding parties to gather resources and create supply chains. Use the materials you’ve gathered to develop your community as you see fit, but be careful — resources will deplete as you pillage areas, and zombies are attracted to noise and activity. Take up the offensive by assaulting hordes before they reach your settlement, or focus on improving your defenses against the massed zombie attacks. Every choice and every action matter in this fully simulated, evolving world.

The Big Picture

As I hinted in the last newsletter, we’ve been working out (in partnership with our publisher) what we can say and when. The first teaser dropped last night on the publisher’s official State of Decay Instagram. Between now and PAX East, we’re going to be showing you a regular glimpse of concept art, followed by a post either here on or on the official State of Decay game website with the big picture, and maybe a little detail explaining what we had in mind when we did it.

I hope it helps tide you over while we finish working on the systems and gameplay, and that you enjoy this look into what we were thinking when we began the build.

Today’s Big Picture is…

It’s Going To Be An Undead New Year

Hello fellow survivors. (It’s been a long time since I last typed that…)

It’s traditional to close out the year with the phrase, “Happy new year!” Usually we say that speculatively, as in, “Boy I sure do hope we have a happy year next year!” But sometimes we might have a reason to actually believe it will be a happy year next year. For those of us here at Undead Labs, we’re looking at a ton of hard work next year (multiple metric tons of tons, more realistically), some late-night panics, a few “oh my god oh my god” meetings, a sprinkling of bug-count out-to-the-woodshed sessions courtesy of our QA team, and some assorted last-minute design or tech change freak outs. And all that can mean only one thing: we’re driving toward the release of State of Decay 2 next year, and that will make it a very happy year indeed.

Halloween Costume Contest!

screenshot11

If you are signed up for our newsletter, you’ve already seen the newest way you can get into SOD2: The Halloween Costume Contest. The grand prize? We’ll turn your costume into an outfit in the game.

The Rules:

  1. We’re looking for survivors, not zombies. Feel free to enter as a zombie (see below), just know you’re not eligible for the grand prize.
  2. To avoid licensing problems and pesky lawsuits, please don’t use (or strategically cover) any brands or logos that are not State of Decay or Undead Labs.
  3. These pictures need to be PG by the standards of the USA. That means weapons are fine, but nudity is not.
  4. Entering means you are giving the Lab permission to share the photos.
  5. The deadline for you to email me a full-length picture of yourself in your costume is October 25th. We will be choosing winners first thing in the morning on October 26. Send your submission (one per person) to sanya at undeadlabs dot com
  6. Winners, plural? Why, yes. In addition to the grand prize winner selected by the judges, I’ll send a t-shirt to the Community Choice poll winner, and decals to three randomly chosen people who enter any costume picture, survivor or zombie.
  7. Our community is global, so even if you live somewhere without Halloween, we’d love for you to enter the contest anyway!

Get dressed up, and get in the game!

Life After Zombies: The Fear

Librarian’s Note: I found this hand-written letter on the front doorstep of the library this morning, stuffed in an unmarked envelope. I have no idea who wrote it, and no one saw who dropped it off. Regardless of the author, I just hope it’s nothing more than a really cruel joke. If it’s not, I’m afraid I have one more reason to be terrified of living in this valley.

Life After Zombies – Community Writing Contest

For the last year, our community team has been crafting stories of life after the zombie infestation in Trumbull Valley for you.  You’ve seen the wins and the losses, the struggles and the triumphs of the people who continue to survive when there was little to no hope of survival.

Calling all storytellers! Do you have a short-short story that would fit into our Life After Zombies series? We would love to share your creation. Keep it under 1500 words, but don’t feel like you can’t go short — some of our favorites are around 500 words. You can tell a story, do a photo essay, transcribe a survivor interview…wherever your muse takes you!
